THE WAR OF THE WORLDS

Seventy years ago today, on October 30, 1938, the day before Halloween, Orson Welles and The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcasted his radio play “The War of the Worlds” (about a Martian invasion of the earth). In adapting the book, the play was written and performed so it would sound like a news broadcast about an invasion of Martians, causing mass hysteria and anxiety in millions of Americans.

They replayed the original on ABC radio in Australia not that long ago, it was awesome. You could really imagine how people thought it was real.

Did they? Are you kidding? I'd pay to see that. How did people react? Those who didn’t know, I mean. And the others, didn’t they recognize the broadcast and/or the voice of Orson Welles?

Olá, Pedro!

It’s great to ear from you too, but why do you guys insist in using Shakespeare’s language instead of Camões’?
Aqui vai um ABRAÇO À GRANDE E À PORTUGUESA, para os Azores(à moda dos “camones”).

No everyone knew what was going on, there was a discussion before and afterwards about the program. Someone did ring in to say that when they were younger they heard it play in a caravan park and couldn't understand why their parents weren't freaking out.

Hi, Carolyn,

Many thanks for your explanation. I appreciate that you took the time to tell me about it.
